Housetraining for Dummies!

Housetraining your pet can be a frustrating experience. It is hard to
punish your dog after having an accident if you did not catch them in the
act. Reprimanding a pet after the incident is not effective and your pet
will not understand why they are in trouble. Do not drag them back to the
spot and yell at them or rub their nose in it. This is not helpful and
will possibly just make them scared of you. If you catch your dog in the
act, firmly say “no” and lead them to the outdoors area where you want
them to relieve themselves.
While housetraining you can puppy proof your house by using housebreaking
pads. These pads can absorb over 100 times their weight in moisture. If
you leave your puppy indoors during the day, these are perfect for placing
in their crates or pen in case of an accident.
Train your dog to go in a specific spot by using a leash and guiding your
dog there. Use commands such as “Go potty” in a firm voice until they
relieve themselves. Then use praise or small treats to reward them for
their good behavior. The dog will begin to associate going potty outdoors
as good and going indoors as bad. Keep a set elimination schedule each day
and guide your dog to the same spot until he goes there on his own.
Even well trained dogs have accidents sometimes, especially if you are
gone for a long period of time or interrupt their schedule. If an accident

If your dog continues to have accidents inside the houses after sufficient
training or does not go in their elimination spot, use an indoor/outdoor
pet repellant to keep them from relieving themselves on certain things.
This can safeguard areas such as furniture, gardens, and more.
Remember that you have to keep pace with your dog. Do not rush too quickly
ahead of them or your attempts will be unsuccessful. Also, too much
freedom too quickly can cause confusion in your pet. Keep them on a set
schedule and guide them to their spot daily until they do it on their own.
If your pet has a couple accidents, slow down and back up, retraining them
for as long as it takes.
